How Long Do Eggs Last in the Fridge? (And When to Toss Them)
2025-08-30
If you’ve ever discovered a carton hiding behind the yogurt, this one’s for you. Here’s the short version:
- Unopened carton: Usually good 3–5 weeks from purchase when refrigerated at ≤ 40°F (4°C).
- After you crack them: Cooked eggs last 3–4 days in the fridge; raw whites/yolks last 2–4 days in airtight containers.
- Freezing: Whole eggs don’t freeze well in-shell, but beaten eggs freeze like champs.
The 10-Second Float Test
Fill a glass with cold water, gently lower an egg:
- Sinks & lays flat: Fresh.
- Sinks & stands up: Still OK—use soon.
- Floats: Retire it with honors. Don’t eat.
Storage Tips
- Keep eggs in their original carton (less moisture/odor transfer).
- Park them on a middle shelf, not the door (temperatures swing there).
- Label hard-boiled eggs—1 week in the fridge is a safe rule.
